A brief overview of Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V

A replacement for 2009's HX1V model, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V is based around a high-speed 1/2.3"-type, 16.2 effective megapixel, backside-illuminated, EXMOR R CMOS image sensor. In place of the Sony G-branded 20x lens from the HX1V, the Sony HX100V has a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* branded 30x optical zoom. As well as offering a brighter, slightly more generous wide angle, the HX100V's lens offers a lot more telephoto reach, although even with the included Optical SteadyShot stabilization with Active mode, you'll likely need good lighting for blur-free photos at the telephoto end of the range.

Arguably the most remarkable part of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V is the lens. As mentioned earlier, this is a 30x zoom that spans focal lengths ranging from 27mm to 810mm. While there are a couple of competitors sporting an even more impressive range, this is still nothing to sneeze at. The zoom is of course stepped, but feels surprisingly smooth in action. It is quite fast too, especially considering the huge focal range that it spans. This is greatly helped by the fly-by-wire manual control ring on the lens barrel, which can be easily assigned to adjust either focus or zoom via a switch on the side. The former is great for macro photography, where the focus can be precisely adjusted while viewing a magnified portion of the image, but we preferred to use it to more accurately zoom through the focal range.

The good: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V is overflowing with shooting features, has excellent photo and video quality, and solid shooting performance for its class.
The bad: The HX100V might actually be too much camera for some users and it has a couple minor design issues.
The bottom line: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V has a lot of features and a lot of lens with photo and video quality that's just good enough to back up its hefty price tag.
